User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Sony Grand Wega
I’m very happy about the purchase of my new Sony television. It arrived in perfect condition and very quickly. It has a crisp, clear picture and I don’t have any buyer’s remorse (which is a first for me)! I would recommend this product to anyone who’s looking for a theatre experience right in their own home.

2 Stars Shame on Sony
While I own and have owned many (over 50) Sony products over the years and overall Sony has made many fine products, they should hang their heads in shame over this one (Sony Grand WEGA KDS-60A2020 60-Inch HDTV). I don’t normally write reviews and rarely knock products, however in this case, I feel that Sony continued to sell a product they knew wasn’t up to their standards. Yet, they continued to sell it, knowing it would be discontinued BEFORE the problem was even corrected. I’ll try to keep the details as short as possible.

I purchased it new from Amazon in May 2007 and have used it less than 600 hours and there appears to be a major problem with it already. When it was brand new the picture was beautiful. However, over the 600 hours I have used it, a color “shading” problem has developed. This makes it really terrible for watching any black & white material and just mildly annoying on regular color material. This appears to be the same problem that Sony was aware of on the forerunner to this model, the KDS-60A2000 (as well as the other screen sizes).

As a result of the problem with the A2000, I was told that Sony extended the warranty on the “optical block”for the A2000. Yet, despite even having trouble with the replacements, they went right ahead and installed the same part in the later A2020 models.

From what I’ve read on some forums, the optical blocks seem to go bad after about 18 months of “normal use”. Considering the fact that I still have a working 21″ Sony Trinitron TV from 1977, this set is a big disappointment. While SXRD (or LCoS & D’ILA) is the best technology for projection TV, rather than correct the problem, Sony chose to just discontinue this type of HDTV and leave all the purchasers with an orphan.

5 Stars The best HDTV ever made.
I’m not sure that this review will even get posted, as I don’t think this product is still on the market. But I wanted to put my two cents in anyway.

This is by far the most amazing television I’ve ever seen. I did months of research and talked to a ton of people and they all overwhelmingly recommended this HDTV.

It’s a shame Sony got out of this particular market (rear projection HD) because this TV is 100x better looking than anything else on the market right now.

Bring it back, Sony. Bring it back.

4 Stars Great TV
Great TV! I purchased this at Sams Club in Nov 2008. Floor model for $732! Added a 3 year warranty for $79 so I can’t lose. I’ve got the BDPS350 Blu-ray hooked up through HDMI and a 360 hooked up through Component and the picture is beautiful. Haven’t tried tweaking the picture yet cause I haven’t had to. There isn’t much of a reflection on this TV which is a big plus. Many LCD’s and Plasma’s are so reflective. My one complaint is that my PC is hooked up (not through HDMI) and you can’t view the PC on the whole screen. Don’t know if a PC/Laptop with an HDMI output would fix that but I assume so. I have a Samsung 46″ DLP and this picture is a lot clearer then that TV.

1 Stars DON’T BE FOOLED BY THIS TV !
This TV has great hi-def picture , but the audio lags the video ,so that it always looks like a badly dubbed foreign film . I have had two different Sony authorized repair people look at it , one took it to his shop for two weeks, only to report that it’s supposed to be that way , and they can’t fix it. I have seven friends and neighbors who have all agreed that they can see the problem clearly , but Sony will not admit that anything is wrong . I’ll never buy another Sony TV , and neither should you. This might be a good purchase for a deaf family who only watch the subtitles and don’t need the audio at all. Everyone else , beware of Sony rear projection technology. You’ll regret it !
